Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified during the third day of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) antitrust trial, describing TikTok—owned by Chinese company ByteDance Ltd.—as a “highly urgent” competitive threat when it began to gain traction in 2018.
Zuckerberg’s comments underscore the pressure Meta faced as TikTok rapidly attracted a younger audience and dominated attention spans with its short-form video content. He explained that the emergence of TikTok necessitated a rapid strategic pivot within Meta, with the company responding by altering its own platforms to compete more effectively, notably by introducing similar features such as Instagram Reels.
The FTC trial is focused on whether Meta’s acquisitions and practices have unfairly stifled competition in the social media and digital advertising markets. Zuckerberg’s testimony highlights Meta’s concerns over rising competition, contradicting criticism that the company has operated without sufficient market pressure.
The trial continues as regulators examine Meta’s business strategy and broader issues of competition in the tech industry.
