Three U.S. Navy destroyers were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, prompting the U.S. military to launch strikes on two Iranian ports, raising significant concerns over the stability of an already fragile ceasefire between the two nations. The American destroyers involved in the incident were the USS Truxton, USS Mason, and USS Rafael Peralta, which came under fire from Iranian missiles, drones, and small boats, according to reports from CBS News.

The U.S. Central Command confirmed the attacks on the destroyers and stated that the military responded with “self-defense strikes” targeting Iranian facilities, specifically drone and missile launch sites located in the ports of Bandar Abbas and Qeshm. Fortunately, U.S. officials noted that the destroyers were not hit during the assault.

President Trump, speaking to ABC News, insisted that the ceasefire remained intact despite the strikes, describing the U.S. actions as “just a love tap.” However, the intensity of the Iranian attacks was reported to be more severe than previous encounters earlier in the week, suggesting a dangerous escalation in hostilities.

During the confrontation, Iranian fast-attack boats maneuvered closely to the American warships, prompting the U.S. vessels to open fire in a bid to protect themselves. Over the course of several hours, the American ships, supported by aircraft, mounted a layered defense. They utilized their five-inch naval guns and close-in weapon systems, known as CIWS, while small-caliber gun teams engaged the attacking boats. Additionally, Apache helicopters were deployed, firing Hellfire missiles to counter the Iranian assault.

Despite the fierce exchange, no casualties or damage to the U.S. vessels were reported. President Trump later commented on the incident via Truth Social, claiming that “great damage” had been inflicted on the Iranian attackers, who he described as having “dropped ever so beautifully down to the Ocean.”

This incident follows a previous barrage encountered by the USS Truxton and USS Mason just days earlier, during which Iran also launched missiles and drones at the U.S. vessels. Notably, CENTCOM reported that it destroyed six Iranian vessels during that earlier engagement, a claim that Iran has denied.

The series of confrontations at sea marks one of the most direct exchanges between the U.S. and Iran since the two countries entered into a ceasefire approximately a month ago. This ceasefire was intended to provide a window for negotiating a longer-term peace agreement. However, ongoing tensions and military posturing have complicated these efforts.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil typically passes. Since the escalation of hostilities in late February, commercial shipping traffic has significantly declined, and global oil prices have surged. Many vessels have opted to avoid the strait altogether, especially as Iran has warned ships against navigating through without its permission.

In a bid to exert further pressure on Iran, President Trump has enforced a blockade on Iranian ports, aiming to cripple the Iranian economy and push for a deal. He recently initiated a project intended to guide commercial ships through the strait, allowing two American vessels to traverse the waterway. However, this initiative, dubbed Project Freedom, was suspended just a day later as the administration sought to gauge the potential for meaningful negotiations with Iran.

As tensions remain high, President Trump has warned that the U.S. military response could escalate significantly if Iran does not engage in negotiations swiftly, stating, “we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST!” The timeline for any future negotiations has not been disclosed, and no in-person talks have been scheduled.
